When his parents' divorce upends his carefully ordered routine, an autistic boy obsessed with comic books must break his own hero's code and join the C.R.E.W. (the Commanders of Recess Engaged in Wickedness), a gang of playground bullies he sees as supervillains, on a mission to ruin his school's Halloween party and steal the "magical" iPod he believes can reunite his family.

A failed writer visiting NYC overhears the story of Wakefield, a man who left his wife for what was meant to be a one-week trip, then spent twenty years living one block away, watching his old life from a distance, for no good reason at all.  

Obsessed with filling the gaps in Wakefield's story, the writer finds he cannot return home to his own wife until he uncovers the truth, even if he has to write the truth himself.
